KWPA WhidbeyAIR is community generated all-internet public station broadcasting from Whidbey Island, Washington. WhidbeyAIR community generated content is streamed from kwparadio.org, whidbeyair.org, iTunes, radioshaker.com, streema.com, listenonline24.com, and other internet radio distributors. KWPA WhidbeyAIR airs hosted talk & music shows, recordings of local events & productions, and the music of both Whidbey musicians and musicians from around the world.
WhidbeyAIR is a registered 501(c)3 not for profit, listed with the Internal Revenue Service of the United States. The station is an all volunteer station. No financial compensation is provided to the KWPA WhidbeyAIR board of directors, volunteer hosts, engineers, or window washers. KWPA WhidbeyAIR raises funds to provide music licensing fees (BMI, SESAC, ASCAP), a public access studio and equipment for the residents of Whidbey Island to produce and host streamed radio shows.
Whidbey Island is a 60-mile-long island northwest of Seattle reachable by ferry on the south end or the Deception Pass Bridge on the north end. KWPA WhidbeyAIR was originally an FCC registered low-power FM station with a transmitter located near Coupeville, in the center of Whidbey Island.
The station suspended the low-power license, with FCC permission, September 28, 2011 due to financial costs of maintaining a transmitter and complying with FCC regulations for a low power FM station. KWPA WhidbeyAIR believes that the internet is a more effective and lower cost method of reaching people who are interested in Whidbey Island. Due to having been silent for more than a year, KWPA-LP's license expired on September 29, 2012, and the FCC deleted the KWPA-LP call sign from their database on February 5, 2014.
