KTLW is a Christian rock radio station owned by the Educational Media Foundation and serves parts of the greater Los Angeles area with programming from the Air1 network. The station broadcasts to the Antelope Valley on 88.9 MHz FM with station facilities based in Lancaster, California.
Worship on the Way
On July 3, 1997, The Church on the Way in Van Nuys started transmissions on KTLW under Life on the Way Communications and carried the "Worship on the Way" radio network. Initially, it aired programming from speakers like John MacArthur and Billy Graham, as well as praise and worship music.[1]
In June 2015, in a general letter to KTLW listeners, Gary Curtis wrote, "We are planning a very special final program to air on July 3rd. You will hear more about it and learn of the time—on air and on our website—so you can be sure to listen.
After that, listeners to KTLW in the Antelope Valley, plus three key translators—88.9 FM serving Canyon Country plus 91.9 FM serving the northern San Fernando, Simi and Santa Clarita Valleys and Hollywood/West L.A.—will enjoy the Air1 format from Educational Media Foundation, perhaps the premiere contemporary Christian music source in America!"
At 7pm PT on July 3, 2015, after an hour of station personnel interviews, favorite song picks, and memories, KTLW relayed information on other local stations with teaching and preaching in the area. Then after exactly 18 years on the air, KTLW played "Majesty", a popular Christian worship song by Jack W. Hayford, and at 7 pm signed off after the sale of the station to EMF two months prior.
EMF Purchase
In May 2015, the sale of KTLW and three translator stations to EMF was announced, and Air1 programming began airing moments after KTLW "Worship on the Way" ceased operations. Only parent station KTLW 88.9 in Lancaster and some of its translators 88.9 K205EP in Santa Clarita, 91.9 K220FR in Simi Valley and 91.9 K220HC in Studio City were purchased by EMF.[2] Air1 was chosen over K-Love programming in Los Angeles because an independent Spanish language station in the Los Angeles area, under the name "K-LOVE" on 107.5 FM, would conflict with the FCC guidelines. The sale was consummated on August 31, 2015, at a purchase price of $1.075 million.
The first song to be played as the nationally syndicated feed of Air 1 began was the last half of Plumb's "Don't Deserve You". Among the other artists heard on Air1 are Chris Tomlin, Kristian Stanfill, Jeremy Camp, TobyMac, Needtobreathe, Building 429, Casting Crowns, Falling Up, Third Day, MercyMe, the Afters, Newsboys, and Tenth Avenue North.
