Julius Kakeeto is an accountant, businessman and bank executive in Uganda, the third-largest economy in the East African Community. He is the current Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Orient Bank,[1] a mid-sized commercial bank, with approximately US$200 million in assets, as of 31 December 2012.[2]

Background and education

He was born in the Central Region of Uganda circa 1960s. He attended St. Mary's College Kisubi, before he entered Strathmore University, a private university in Kenya. He obtained the degree of Bachelor of Commerce from Strathmore. He continued his studies at the Manchester Business School, where he graduated with the degree of Master of Business Administration. Later, he studied for and was awarded the qualification of Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants of the United Kingdom. He is also a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda.[3]

Career

In the late 1990s, Kakeeto worked with Ernst & Young. When Citibank Uganda was founded in 1999, he was part of he start-up team, working as the Chief Finance Officer, in the new subsidiary. Following that, he worked at the headquarters of Citibank's Africa Division, in Johannesburg, South Africa. He then transferred to Citibank's offices in London, where he worked as Vice President in their Investment Banking Division, focusing on Emerging Markets.[4] Prior to joining Orient Bank, he served as the Finance Director at Equity Bank (Uganda).[3] In 2014, he was appointed as the CEO at Orient Bank, having headed the institution in an acting capacity since 2013.[5]
