Chu Chu (born 7 March 1997), nicknamed Sìyècǎo (四葉草, literally "four-leaf clover"), is a Malaysian singer who rose to fame after the music video of her song, "Malaysia Chabor", gained more than 7 million views on YouTube.[1] She is also a member of RED People, a group of artists supervised by controversial rapper-songwriter Namewee.

Early life

Joyce Chu was born and raised in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. She has an older sister and an older brother, Joey, who starred in some of her videos.[2][3] She graduated from Si Ling Secondary School in Singapore, but discontinued her studies after her GCE 'O' Level examination to focus on her online career.[4]

Career

Chu became a regional internet sensation with her song "Malaysia Chabor", composed by Namewee with information about herself. The song was based on recounts of netizens uploading her photos onto fake accounts and describing her as a Korean, which annoyed her, and she uses the song to tell others she is a "Malaysian Chabor" (Malaysian girl) and not Korean, as many have assumed her to be.[5][6] Since June 2014, the video has reached about five million views on YouTube, and has spawned covers and parodies by others, especially by a Singaporean recruit consultant, Gary Chun, who made his own version called "Singapore Dapor" in which he showed his affection for Chu.[7][8]

On 15 October 2014, Chu released a self-composition entitled "Your Little Round Hand" (伸出圆手) for the 100th anniversary of Doraemon. Chu was a guest star at Singaporean talent competition The Ultimate Star Finals, and told The New Paper that she intended to become a singer-actress in Singapore.[4]

Her next song, "Like Me", is on different social media platforms, which is part of Ohhsome CrossXover with Maxis's Hotlink. The music video was uploaded to YouTube on 10 December 2014.

In 2015, it was announced that Chu would be starring in Singapore's first cosplay-themed film, "Young & Fabulous", alongside Aloysius Pang, Jeffrey Xu and Joshua Tan. Chu also became the celebrity beauty advisor for Water 360° by Watson's, and her song, "It's A Long Day", was done as a collaboration with Water 360°.

In November 2015, it was announced that Chu would release her self-titled EP. The lead single from the EP, "I Miss U", featured herself in more than a hundred locations in different countries. another version has rap verses by Namewee. A third video was also planned to mash up covers by a huge number of fans, sent by e-mail from 4 to 20 December.
