José Filipe Correia Semedo (born 26 December 1979) is a Cape Verdean footballer who plays for Casa Pia A.C. as a forward.
Club career
Born in Lisbon, Portugal, Semedo started his senior career with local amateurs C.F. Benfica, signing for neighbouring Odivelas F.C. in 2001. After stellar performances with the latter in the third division (18 goals in 29 matches in the 2007–08 season), he attracted attention from top level clubs, eventually joining Rio Ave FC.
In his first match in the competition, on 24 August 2008, Semedo scored in a 1–1 home draw against Benfica.[1] In January of the following year he moved to Cyprus, teaming up with several Portuguese players at APOP Kinyras FC.
In May 2010, after two solid seasons – including 22 Cypriot First Division goals in his first full campaign, competition best – he stayed in the country, signing with cup winners Apollon Limassol.[2]
On 7 September 2013, Semedo joined Albanian Superliga side Tirana on a free transfer for the 2013–14 season.[3][4] He made his debut for the club on 29 September, playing 55 minutes in a 2–0 away defeat to Teuta Durrës.[5] Four days later, in his second appearance, Semedo scored his first goal of the season, a winner against Kastrioti Krujë in the 6th week of the league, returning Tirana in the winning ways after three consecutive losses.[6] Eighteen days later, Semedo was on the scoresheet again, netting another winner as Tirana defeated 1–0 Bylis Ballsh at Selman Stërmasi Stadium.[7] Those were the only goals that he scored during his spell at Tirana. In December 2013, he made his Albanian Cup debut with Tirana, appearing in two-legged tie against Lushnja, playing respectively 80 and 44 minutes in each leg in a eventual second round exit.[8] With the opening of winter transfer window, Semedo was released from the club.[9] During his time with Tirana, Semedo played 11 matches between league and cup, scoring twice in the process.
International career
Although Portuguese-born, Semedo opted to represent Cape Verde internationally, starting in the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying stage. Semedo debuted on 11 October 2008 in a 2010 World Cup qualifying match against Tanzania, scoring his team only goal in a eventual 3–1 loss.[10] Two years later, on 24 May 2010, Semedo made his second international appearance ironically against his brith country Portugal, appearing as a first-half substitute in a goalless draw.[11]
