Muthama is one of the hard stand politicians who have openly disagreed with jubilee government policies. He is affiliated to Kalonzo Musyoka, the presumed leader of kamba politics in Kenya

As of Late Kenyan journalist Felix kilonzo described Muthama as the new liberal leader of the kamba politics expressing radical views despite maintaining a stand that violence is the only solution to the political problem in the nation.

In early November 2013, Senator Muthama publicly announced that the government of Uhuru Kenyatta had withdrawn his security due to his stand over the ongoing cases in the international Criminal Court where Uhuru Kenyatta is facing trials. Muthama categorically stated that he was not going to relent from speaking the truth.Muthama has been a case of controversial on goings.
