San José Unified School District is a K-12 school district in Santa Clara County, California. It serves a large portion of the city of San Jose, California with a student population of approximately 32,000 in California's Silicon Valley. The district has more than 3,000 staff members who serve students in 42 schools that stretch from the Almaden Valley to downtown San José.

Strategic plan
On May 17, 2012 the San Jose Unified Board of Education unanimously approved a new five-year Strategic Plan called OPPORTUNITY21. The focus of OPPORTUNITY21 is to eliminate the opportunity gap and provide all SJUSD students with the finest 21st century education.[4]

- Strategy 4.1: Develop a rigorous employee hiring process with a focused effort on hiring a diverse workforce with 21st century skills.

- Objective 5: SJUSD will align resources to the strategic plan and equity policy and demonstrate cost effective budget management.
- Strategy 5.1: Develop an accountability system for all managers with budget control authority.
- Strategy 5.2: Establish an annual system for validating priorities that align to the Strategic Plan and Equity Policy.
History
In 1983 Federal Bankruptcy Judge Seymour Abrahams declared the school board bankrupt under Chapter 9. The judge rolled back employee wages.[5]
In the fall of 2011 the district passed a new vision and mission that called for ensuring the elimination of the opportunity gap and that a quality 21st century education be provided to every student.
