Joanna Jędrzejczyk (Polish pronunciation: [jɔˈanna jɛnˈdʐɛjt͡ʂɨk], born August 18, 1987) is a Polish mixed martial artist who competes in the women's strawweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. She is the current UFC Women's Strawweight Champion and the third European champion in UFC history after Bas Rutten in 1999 and Andrei Arlovski in 2005. As of November 30, 2015: she is the consensus #1 female strawweight in the world.[2][3][4] Sherdog also lists her as the #1 Pound for Pound female fighter in the world, while Fight Matrix and ESPN list her as #2 female pound for pound.[5][6][7] She is the #13 pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC mixed gender rankings, becoming the second female to debut on the list.[8] She is also a six-time world champion and four-time European champion in Muay Thai.

Early life

Joanna Jędrzejczyk was born in Olsztyn. She discovered Muay Thai as a teenager, while taking up fitness, which eventually led her to competitions.[9][10]

Muay Thai career

Jędrzejczyk competed in Muay Thai for 10 years, winning 70 matches and six world championships and four European championships.[11] She has a professional kickboxing record of 27 wins and 2 losses and an amateur kickboxing record of 37 wins and 3 losses.

Mixed martial arts

Early career

Jędrzejczyk made her professional debut in mixed martial arts (MMA) on May 19, 2012 at SFT - MMA Fight Night Diva SPA against Sylwia Juskiewicz, winning via unanimous decision.[12] On December 8, 2012 at MFC 5 she defeated Lily Kazak via submission (rear-naked choke).[13] On June 20, 2013 at Battle of Moscow 12 she defeated the #1 Russian WMMA fighter Julia Berezikova via unanimous decision.[14]

At the end of June 2013, Jędrzejczyk was ranked in 7th place (cat.-55 kg) by Fightmatrix.com.

On June 7, 2014 at Cage Warriors Fighting Championship 69 she defeated Rosi Sexton via knockout (punch) in the second round.[15]

Ultimate Fighting Championship

Jędrzejczyk officially signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in July 2014.[16] She made her promotional debut on July 26, 2014 at UFC on Fox: Lawler vs. Brown against Juliana Lima.[17] She won the fight via unanimous decision.[18]

Jędrzejczyk next faced undefeated strawweight top contender Cláudia Gadelha on December 13, 2014 at UFC on Fox 13.[19] She won the fight via split decision. The judges' decision caused controversy afterwards. A majority of the MMA media scored the bout in favor of Gadelha.[20]

Strawweight Champion

Jędrzejczyk faced Carla Esparza for the UFC Strawweight Championship on March 14, 2015 at UFC 185.[21] Jędrzejczyk won the one-sided bout via TKO in the second round, becoming the first UFC title-holder from Poland and first female European UFC champion.[10][22] Subsequently, Jędrzejczyk won a Performance of the Night bonus.[23]

Jędrzejczyk made her first title defense against Jessica Penne on June 20, 2015 at UFC Fight Night 69.[24] She successfully defended the title against Penne, defeating her in the third round via TKO following a flurry of punches and a knee against the cage. Both participants were awarded Fight of the Night honors.[25][26] Subsequently, Jędrzejczyk underwent surgery to repair a fractured thumb incurred during the fight. She revealed that she expected to return before the end of 2015.[27]

In her second title defense, Jędrzejczyk faced Valérie Létourneau on November 15, 2015 in the co-main event at UFC 193.[28] She won the fight by unanimous decision to retain her title. 220 significant strikes were landed by Jędrzejczyk in her unanimous decision triumph over Létourneau, the most ever in a championship fight.[29] 70 Leg kicks were landed by Jedrzejczyk, the most in UFC history. The previous record was 68, set by Carlos Condit against Nick Diaz at UFC 143.[30]

Fighting style and coaches

A decorated kickboxer, Jędrzejczyk is known for precise and calculated striking.[31] While standing with opponents, she constantly varies between high punches and body shots, also utilizing knees, elbows, and high front kicks.[32][33] She also uses a flurry of strikes just to confuse the opponent before landing a solid strike, much akin to Chuck Liddell.[34]

During her Muay Thai career, Jędrzejczyk was trained by kickboxers Ernesto Hoost and Paul Slowinski. Upon making the transition to MMA, she began training with Pawel Derlacz, Szymon Bonkowski and Robert Drysdale.[10][31]

Her nutritionist is Jakub Mauricz.[35]
