Jerrilynn Patton, known as Jlin, is an electronic musician from Gary, Indiana. Patton began producing music in 2008, and her track "Erotic Heat" featured on the 2011 Planet Mu compilation Bangs and Works Vol. 2. The song was later used to accompany a 2014 Rick Owens fashion show.[1] Jlin's debut album, Dark Energy, was released in 2015 to critical acclaim.[2]
Background
Growing up, Patton was exposed to music through her parents, and her favorite artists were Anita Baker, Rachelle Ferrell, and Sade. She also heard footwork at an early age.[1] When she began making her own music in 2008,[3] Patton played her mother a song that she had made which sampled the Teena Marie track "Portuguese Love". Her mother's response prompted Patton to create her own unique sound.[1] After making the track "Erotic Heat", she was afraid to release it because it did not fit the conventional sound of a footwork song.[1] The track was ultimately released on Planet Mu's Bangs & Works, Vol. 2 compilation in 2011, which showcased Chicago juke and footwork artists and brought Jlin attention. She released her debut album Dark Energy in 2015 to critical acclaim.[4]
Patton works in a steel mill.[3]
