Jhal Magsi district is in the centre of Balochistan province of Pakistan.^[1] The district is named after the town of Jhal, seat of the Magsi tribe, thus the name of Jhal Magsi is the headquarters of the major Baloch tribe within the district. The Magsi tribe is historically branched off the early Lashari tribes. The district is divided into two sub divisions: Gandawah and Jhal Magsi. Both sub divisions have a different administrative history.

Language

According to the 1998 population census of Pakistan following are the major languages of the district

• Saraiki 42% (known as Mulki being local saraiki dialect effected by Sindhi spoken by Jamot tribes)
• Balochi 30%
• Brahui 26%
• Others 2% Punjabi, Pashto, Persian and Urdu

Administration

Jhal Magsi district is administratively divided into two tehsil, Jhal Magsi, and Gandawah with one sub tehsil Mirpur. It had nine Union Council in 2012, but last year four Union Council were added by local government department at recommdation of Deputy Commissioner/Delimitation Officer. Namely the union councils of Jhal Magsi District are as under:

Population

Saraiki Region of Sindh and Balochistan

The population of Jhal Magsi District was estimated to be over 377,000 in 2009. Over 99% of the people of the area are Muslims. The major Baloch tribes in the district are Lashari, Khoso, Magsi and Hathyari village of Machi. Majeedano tribes are also settle in large numbers. There is tehsil Called Nari/Barijo in jhal magsi. In Jhal Magsi there is a lakho peer near Barijo. In Jhal Magsi District about 30% are Lasharis, 60% are Magsi and 10% others..
