Jevargi is a Panchayat town in Kalaburagi district in Karnataka, India. It is the headquarters of the Jevargi Taluk.

Geography

Jevargi is located at 17°01′N 76°46′E / 17.02°N 76.77°E / 17.02; 76.77.[1] It has an average elevation of 393 metres (1290 ft). The town is spread over an area of 4.25 km².[2][3]

Jevargi Taluk borders Afzalpur Taluk and Gulbarga Taluk to the north, Chitapur Taluk to the east, Shahpur Taluk to the south-east, Shorapur Taluk to the south and Sindgi Taluk to the west. The Bhima River flows just north of Jevargi.

Demographics

As of the 2001 India census,[4] Jevargi had a population of 19,174 persons. Jevargi was 51% male and 49% female. Jevargi has an average literacy rate of 53%, which is lower than the national average of 59.5 per cent. The male literacy rate was 63%, while the female literacy rate was only 43%, slightly worse than the national literacy gap in gender.[5] Seventeen per cent of the population was under 6 years of age.
