Jerome Hughes is an Irish television reporter from Laghy in County Donegal, part of the Province of Ulster in Ireland. He currently works as a senior reporter for TV3 where he signs off each report with the line: "Jerome Hughes, TV3 News".[1] Prior to joining TV3, Jerome worked for Sky News where he was responsible for filming, editing and reporting on news stories across Ireland.
Early career
After attending a communications course in Derry, Jerome began his career with North West Radio. He spent six years with NWR before moving to Highland Radio, an independent radio station based in Letterkenny, County Donegal. He left Highland Radio to go to TV3 on Friday the 13th of December 2002.[2] A year later he moved from Highland Radio to work for TV3, he left to work for Sky News. He eventually moved backed to TV3.
Presenter/producer/writer
Jerome presented The Property Game on TV3.[3] He also produced and wrote the TV3 documentary - Maddie: Secrets of the Dossier - which promised revelations about the disappearance of Madeleine McCann[4] and a news documentary about child abuse in the Catholic Church. He has also appeared on Nightly News with Vincent Browne.
High points
Throughout Jerome's career he has interviewed many household names such as: Sarah Jessica Parker, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Meryl Streep and Bill Clinton.[1]
Jerome was also one of TV3's foremost reporters in the 2007 Irish general election, joining newsreader Alan Cantwell and Jenny McCudden at the country's largest count centre, the RDS in Dublin, on Friday May 25, 2007 as the counting got underway.
He once asked Enda Kenny a question that he could not answer.[5]
Death threat
On Friday the 13th of July 2007, while Jerome was reporting for TV3 (at an inquest into the death of an Irish prisoner) outside Dublin City Coroner's Court, he received a death threat live on air. Jerome was reporting for the main evening news when shouting could be heard coming from behind him. A man wearing a brown hoodie approached Jerome and pulled up his hood. "I'll blow your fucking head off", the man shouted. The man continued to make a gun shape with his hand at Jerome's face and said, "Ya fuckin' muppet" before it cuts back to the studio.[6][7] There were fears for Jerome's life while the Irish Daily Star and his local radio station Highland Radio reported on the incident.[8]
The incident was broadcast on The Podge and Rodge Show on 3 March 2009. Host Caroline Morahan awarded Jerome's attacker with the best TV cameo award at a fake Meteor Awards ceremony.

By contrast, TV3 News had no doubt of the national importance of the address and put it firmly at the front of its bulletin. TV3's follow-up was sharper too. Jerome Hughes asked Enda Kenny how he could follow that, and Kenny's silence said it all.
