Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya,[2] Porbandar is a part of the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) family. The school is located near Dharampur Patiya and Vanana village, seven kilometres from the city Porbandar, India, on national highway 8B. The school is also known as JNV Porbandar or JNV PBR.

History

Established in 1986, under the Navodaya Vidyalaya Scheme, the school is CBSE affiliated, co-educational and residential. Initially when the school building and other infrastructure was under development, the school was operational in a rented building in Porbandar city. This school was part of Junagadh district before formation of Porbandar district in 1997. After that, the children from both districts Porbandar and Junagadh were admitted to JNV Porbandar. After allocation of JNV Kodinar to Junagadh district, children from Junagadh district are admitted to JNV Kodinar and those from Porbandar district are admitted to JNV Porbandar.

Purpose

JNV are Indian schools for talented children and form a part of the system of gifted education. The objectives of the scheme are to provide good quality modern education to the children predominantly from rural areas, without regard to their family's socio-economic condition.

Characteristics

All expenses including boarding, school uniforms, lodging and education, are funded by central government. The school has Deputy magistrate (collector) of Porbandar district, as chairman. The Principal, the teachers and all staff are recruited by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti.

Hostels

Separate quarters are available for staff to reside in the campus. Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya provides free of cost hostel facility to its boarders. Hostel is compulsory for everyone during his/her 7 years' stay in campus. There are four hostels (popularly known as houses) named after Indian mountain ranges. There are six boys hostels, and two girls hostels. For each house, there are two house masters, one for juniors, and one for seniors.

  1. Aravalli House (named after Aravalli Range) - Senior and Junior Boys
  2. Nilgiri House (named after Nilgiri Mountains) - Senior and Junior Boys
  3. Shivalik House (named after Sivalik Hills) - Senior and Junior Boys
  4. G1 House - Senior Girls
  5. G2 House - Junior Girls

Previously, senior and junior students were boarding together in same house. The house names were named after notable persons in Indian history:

Infrastructure

The school has a computer lab, gym, library, an indoor sports room, an arts room, music room and multipurpose hall. There is a central mess, with two dining halls, one for senior boys, and other for junior boys and girls. There is a multipurpose playground, and separate Kho Kho, Kabbadi, volleyball and cricket grounds.
