Born in Decatur, Alabama, Carthen graduated from Scott High School in Toledo, Ohio, in 1989 and played at Ohio University from 1989 through 1992, where he was voted team MVP his senior year and is the all-time leader in sacks, tackles-for-Loss and caused fumbles.[1] He had a three-year career in the National Football League from 1993 to 1995 as an outside linebacker. He was injured in 1995 after signing a free-agent contract offer with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He played one more year in NFL Europe with the Rhein Fire (Düsseldorf, Germany) from 1996 to 1997, where he led the league in special-teams tackles. He has served for over two decades in both the public and private sectors of Leadership and Business Management, specifically with the National Football League Players Association[3] and The Leaders of Tomorrow Initiative™.

In the fall of 2006, Dr. Carthen joined the faculty of Bethel University as Adjunct Professor of Leadership Studies.[4] A well-regarded scholar in the field of leadership studies and business management, Carthen's research focuses upon motivation, hope, optimism, and positive psychology. In 2006, he was published in the book, Servant Leadership: An Introduction.

As a former professional football player with the New England Patriots, he is a highly sought-after international speaker in the areas of leadership, faith and business.[4] Carthen's research suggests that traditional organizational frameworks often resemble sports ecology, and for this reason, linkages should exist between sport and society. In 2010 he authored the seminal work, "A Phenomenological inquiry of the Psychological Antecedents of Preferred leadership in a sports context".

From 2009 to 2011, Carthen served as a host for WDLI, where he regularly appeared on Joy in Our Town and Praise the Lord.[4] Prior to TBN, Carthen appeared as a guest on ABC and NBC, as well as ESPN, where he was a contributor to the Outside the Lines television show. In January 2010, he created his weekly podcast The Leadership Minute.[5]

Dr. Carthen is a longtime proponent of civic engagement, social justice and youth advocacy. He founded the Leaders of Tomorrow Initiative™, a non-profit organization aiming to educate underprivileged youth about leadership, character and civic responsibilities.[6] In 2008, he started a mentoring program that uses his own curriculum The T.I.E.S. that Bind to increase leadership capacities, character development, school engagement and reading skills among high school and college students.

Through his foundation's mentoring initiative, he collects qualitative research data to assess the impact of mentoring on the success of high school students entering institutions of higher learning. Called The Influence Study™ Dr. Carthen's research utilizes grounded theory to track outcomes amongst program participants to serve as a predictor of long-term success. Seeking to positively impact society in perpetuity, Dr. Carthen also created a scholarship initiative for youth.
