Jane Austen College is a secondary free school located in Norwich, owned by the Inspiration Trust, that opened in September 2014.[1] The school's Principal is Claire Heald.[2]
History
Plans for the school were announced in March 2013 with the intention to locate in central Norwich.[2] Jane Austen was approved by the Department for Education, on 22 May 2013, to open in September 2014.[3]
Academic organisation
The school will eventually have places to educate 1,100 pupils aged 11–18. The school specialises in English and humanities, and all pupils are required to study a language until age 16.[4] There are also classes on cultural education and the compulsory language study also includes Latin.[5] Students are taught in fixed mixed ability classes for KS3, and plans for KS4 have not been confirmed. The school does not to set homework for its pupils, but instead has an extended school day finishing at 4:30pm on Monday and Friday. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday the school remains open until 5:30pm for pupils to take part in "Electives", an activity of the pupils' choice such as choir or football.[1][5]
GCSEs
GCSE options have not been confirmed, however, in a GCSE options evening, Claire Heald has stated that the proposed optional GCSEs include Engineering, Business Studies and Computer Science, though not GCSE Physical Education.[6] The school is aiming for all pupils to complete English Baccalaureate.
Physical Education
As the school does not have much land, pupils travel to the University of East Anglia in some units during two periods of one-hour lessons. Some sports which have been done there have included football. Some P.E. units, such as Dance, Gymnastics and Dodgeball, are done at school in the Dance Studio, Atrium or outdoor area. In the 2014-2015 academic year, year sevens were taught in the same mixed gender mixed ability groups as in normal classes, but in the 2015-2016 academic year, two classes are combined and separated in two groups, one male, one female. These groupings are also used for both current year groups.
