James Diego Thompson (1788-1854) was a Scottish Baptist Pastor, and educator in South America.[1]
Biography
Born 1788 in Scotland, Thompson began his studies at the University of Glasgow. He learned Spanish language, and served as a pastor in a village in Scotland.[2] In 1818, was arrived at the port of Buenos Aires. Thompson was sent by the British and Foreign Bible Society, to carry out the education system created by Joseph Lancaster.[3] Due to the successful implementation of the Lancastrian system, James Thompson was appointed director of schools in Buenos Aires.[4] Thompson was invited by the General José de San Martín to visit the city of Lima, in order to introduce modern education system.[5] In 1821, Thompson was hired by the government of Chile.[6]
James Diego Thompson was appointed an honorary citizen of the United Provinces of the River Plate, for his great contribution to national public education.[7]
