Jalalabad is a city and a municipal council in Fazilka district in the Indian state of Punjab.

History

Mamdot Nawabi was carved by Qutubuddin Khan in 1800 in the Firozpur district. He conquered Mamdo from the Rai of Raikot in 1800. Jalalabad was founded by Nawab of Mamdo as its capital.[1] It is named after the famous Nawab Jalaluddin Khan s/o Nawab Qutubuddin Khan.[2][3]

Geography

Jalalabad is a constituency in the Indian state of Punjab. There are 22 districts in Punjab, out of which six districts are border districts - Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarantaaran, Ferozepur and Fazilka. In the Fazilka district there are three tehsils, Jalalabad West, Fazilka and Abohar. River Sutlej makes the western boundary of this division. There are some sand dunes in the Fazilka Range, meaning there is uneven topography in this part of the district. The natural depressions along the roads often get flooded during the rainy season and this causes water-logging in some areas. The depressions are generally along the roads and canals from where earth is removed during construction of roads or canals. Jalalabad is considered as a border area and the Pakistani border is around 15 km from Jalalabad. Jalalabad has an average elevation of 176 metres (577 feet). The tract is generally flat and the slope is towards south-west. In Jalalabad (West), there are 70 rice mills making it the maximum rice producing constituencies in the state of Punjab.

Soil

The soil is typical of Punjab plains. It is loam to sandy loam in Fazilka. The areas near the river are clay to silty loam. Soil in the Jalalabad Range of this Division is saline due to the impeded drainage. The soil as a whole is very useful for agricultural and forestry purposes.

Climate

The climate is characterised by extremely hot summers and cold, dry winters. These climatic conditions are quite unfavorable for the growth of plants. The forests covered under this working plan fall in five Ranges of Ferozepur Forest Division. These are Zira, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Jalalabad and Abohar. The forests are controlled by the D.F.O, from District Headquarters (Ferozepur). The work load has increased due to the various development schemes, and the number of staff is not enough to complete the work. The present position of the staff in the five ranges and Divisional Office is given in Table No.5. Due to a shortage of field staff, it is very difficult to protect the forest as such. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that the sanctioned strength of staff be immediately granted in the interest of Protection, Conservation and Development of forests. In absence of official staff, the functioning of important branches like Accounts, Establishment, Revenue etc. suffer a lot.
