Jackson Murphy

Jackson Murphy, known as Lights Camera Jackson (born July 30, 1998, Albany, New York) is a teenaged movie critic, and author of the website Lights-Camera-Jackson.com, on television and radio. In 2010, he became the youngest winner to date of a New York Emmy Award for "On Camera Talent: Commentator/Editorialist".

Post-radio career

In 2010, Murphy had several major milestones. He appeared on Fox & Friends to review the upcoming Oscars nominees,^[1] correctly predicting all of the winners in the major categories (except for last year). He grabbed the attention of several celebrities, notably Roger Ebert. He was also nominated for two New York Emmy awards,^[2] and won "On Camera Talent: Commentator/Editorialist", the youngest winner of a NY Emmy to date.

Murphy made numerous national TV appearances during the summer, including Weekend Today in late June and The Early Show four different times. He was blasted by Howard Stern on his satellite radio show following one of his appearances on The Early Show for his review of Inception. He has also appeared on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" (twice), "The Nate Berkus Show", "Fox and Friends" (three times) and was featured on "Live with Regis and Kelly".

Murphy was signed by CBS as a contributing critic to The Early Show and, in the fall, also became a regular contributor on The Morning Show on the Seven Network in Australia. His movie reviews also appear every weekend in The (Troy) Record newspaper, and he has been the subject of articles and stories in both the U.S. and internationally, including an article in Variety.^[3]

In July 2011, Jackson became a regular contributor for the popular movie review show Ebert Presents: At the Movies. Thus far, Murphy has appeared on three episodes of the program, providing commentary on 3-D film technology and listing his best and worst movies of the year so far.

As the youngest member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association Jackson appeared on the "Critics Choice Movie Awards" in January 2013. Since November 2013, Jackson also has regularly appeared (via telephone) on "The Buttery Popcorn Report" on The FLY 92.3 in Albany, New York, as a part of the station's "Morning Rush". On The Buttery Popcorn Report, Jackson gives his opinions on all the new movies out in theaters every week and also on DVD and Blu-ray.

In 2015, he appeared on the Today Show in Australia.

Criticism and controversy

In 2010, Howard Stern lambasted Jackson Murphy on his radio show, opining that Murphy was too young and inexperienced to formulate meaningful or valid criticism.^[4] Since then, Murphy has been frequently criticized by the public and media. Matt Cherette of gawker.com described Murphy's Inception (2010) review as "insufferable."^[5]

Chiwetel Ejiofor tweet

In July 2015, Murphy tweeted a picture of himself with 12 Years a Slave star Chiwetel Ejiofor with the caption "Happy birthday to my man Chiwetel Ejiofor. Don't be a slave to your diet — have some cake." Jackson has since deleted the tweet, but screencaps of the post remain.^[6]

Amy Schumer tweet

In January of 2016 Murphy tweeted a picture of himself with comedian Amy Schumer at the 2016 Critics' Choice Movie Awards during which he wrote "Spent the night with @amyschumer. Certainly not the first guy to write that."^[7] Though he initially denied that he had intended anything sexual from his tweet, the comment drew ire from Schumer causing Murphy to delete his tweet and later apologize in the wake of media criticism. ^[8][9]
