Career
Beginning his professional songwriting career in Canada from the age of 17, Houston has a large catalogue of songs composed for TV, theater, film and record. One of his first credits was composing the theme song to the PBS/YTV children's series The Big Comfy Couch while still in high school. With hundreds of credits through his 20-year career, he was nominated for a Gemini Award (Canadian Emmy) for Best Original Music Score in a Dramatic Series in 2001.[1] His work has appeared on The Rosie O'Donnell Show, Funny or Die Presents, and countless other national and international productions. A song co-written by Houston was featured in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. He has composed for PBS, BBC, HBO, CBC, and many others.
Releasing his first solo album in 2006, JP performs and records constantly. He has toured and recorded all over North America and Europe. Most recently, as a member of Brian Bell's Weezer side project The Relationship.[2] JP did a 2-year stint leading the house band at Pappy & Harriet's in Pioneertown CA.[3] The popular shows saw him trading songs with the likes of Tim Easton, Victoria Williams, Band of Horses, M. Ward, John Doe, and host of other guests who sat in every week.
In 2013, JP began his radio variety show American Parlor Songbook.[4] The program originates from its home station of KVCR (FM) in Southern California, and is carried by a growing number of stations and online as a podcast. Houston and his wife Julie Van Dusen present the program in front of live audiences. The show features JP's original songs and stories every episode.
