Ivan Yarygin Sports Palace

The Ivan Yarigin sports palace was commissioned on 5 November 1981 as the “Enisey sports palace”. The design project was done by famous architect, correspondent member of Russian architecture academy, Vitaliy Orekhov. The shape of the building resembles an old carvel ship. Same obtuse front, curvy sides, round windows, resembling gun slots on cannon deck, moreover such associations are caused by location of the building, as it is situated on the island in the powerful Siberian river Enisey. When used for sports, the building seats up to 3347 fans, in case of basketball, 4100 and if it is used for a concert it allows 5000 visitors.

The name of legendary sportsman, manager and double Olympic champion Ivan Yarigin was given to the palace in 1998.

The first sporting event which took place in the palace was the 5th Winter Sports Contest of Soviet People in 1982 and in four years the 6th sports contest took place there. The stands of the palace saw the figure skating cup of Siberia and Far East, wrestling, badminton, acrobatics, championships of USSR in wrestling, basketball, eurhythmics and artistic gymnastics, Russian national championships in boxing, ice-hockey, karate, tae kwon do etc. In 1997 the palace had its second birthday. It was reconstructed before the XXXII world wrestling championship. The world wrestling forum went perfectly well. Afterwards it hosted XXV sambo championship, IV summer sports contest of people of Siberia, international V.N. Gulidov’s judo cup, inter regional fitness convention, Alexei Nemov’s show “Sports legend” ice show by Irina Lobacheva and Ilya Averbuh “Italian Carnival” and other significant events. International women wrestling grand-prix “Ivan Yarigin” championship was chrysographed in the chronicles of the palace. In 2007 the palace hosted participants of women wrestling and wrestling world cups.

But for contests of all kinds and shows of pop stars, there is a lot of work being done to attract children to sport groups, such as swimming, eurhythmics, tennis, fencing, aerobics, shaping-up, yoga, eastern dance, ballroom dance, aerobic dance, ping-pong. Also older people are not being left behind, there are groups of therapeutic exercise, jogging. Moreover there is base for two youth Olympic schools for wrestling and weightlifting.
