Ivan Sergeivich Yarygin (7 November 1948 – 11 October 1997) was a former Soviet - Russian wrestler and Olympic champion in Freestyle wrestling. A multiple World Cup winner in the United States, he became a coach following his competitive career and later he was the President of the Russian Wrestling Federation.
Biography
Born in Ust-Kamzas, Kemerovo Oblast,[1] Yarygin competed at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich where he received a gold medal in Freestyle wrestling, the 100 kg (220 lb) weight class.[2] He also won a gold medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.[3]
Yarygin was killed in a car crash in 1997. In March 2002, a monument was dedicated to Yarygin in Krasnoyarsk. A commemorative international tournament, the Golden Grand Prix Ivan Yarygin, takes place every year in Krasnoyarsk in mid-winter.
Yarygin was inducted into the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2010.[1]
