Islamic Association of Women

The Islamic Association of Women (Jam’iat-e Zanan-e Jomhouri-e Islami in Persian) is an Iranian political party. It is the first officially registered party of the Islamic Republic of Iran.^[1]

History and profile

The party was established 1987.^[1] The secretary-general of the party has been Zahra Mostafavi, the daughter of Ayatollah Khomeini.^[1] Fatemeh Karroubi, wife of Mehdi Karroubi, is among its notable members.^[1]

The party supported Mohammad Khatami in the 1997 and 2001 presidential elections.^[1] Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani was supported by the party in the 2005 elections.^[1] Mir-Hossein Mousavi enyoyed the support of the party in the 2009 elections.^[1] The party’s main objective was to improve women’s rights in Iran and various international conferences for this aim were organized by the group.^[1]
