Islamabad United is a Pakistani professional Twenty20 franchise cricket team that competes in the Pakistan Super League. The team is based in Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan and was formed in 2015 to compete in the first season of the Pakistan Super League. The franchise is owned by Leonine Global Investments through its sports entity Leonine Global Sports.[1] The team is captained by Pakistan's most successful test captain Misbah-ul-Haq and coached by former Australian player Dean Jones. The team director is former Pakistani fast bowler Wasim Akram.[2][3]

Franchise history

In 2015, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced that the inaugural season of the Pakistan Super League would take place in February 2016 in the United Arab Emirates.[4] On 3 December 2015, the PCB unveiled the owners of five city-based franchises. The Islamabad franchise was sold to Leonine Global Sports for US$15 Million.[1]

Team History

2016 Pakistan Super League

United started the tournament with two back to back loss.Islamabad United played their first match against Quetta Gladiators which they lost by 8 wickets after losing the toss and batting first.[5] They Lost another match against Peshawar Zalmi by 24 runs.They then Won next two matches against Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars In their third match, kings won the toss and sent united to bat Islamabad scored 132 for 8 in their 20 overs.Khalid Latif was the top scorer for the Islamabad side as he made 39 runs from 35 balls In Reply Ravi Bopara was the top scorer with 32 from 19 balls almost win his side the match But Kings fell two runs short as they scored 130 for 9 in their 20 overs.Saeed Ajmal was awarded match of the match for his 3 for 27.[6]United in their fourth match beat Lahore Qalandars convincingly by eight wickets. In the 167 run chase, Islamabad’s Sharjeel Khan 79 off 43 and stand in captain Shane Watson 79 off 47 partnered up for the biggest opening stand of the inaugural PSL of 153 runs.[7]

Team Logo and Name

The team logo and name was revealed on 22 December 2015 in a ceremony held at the Polo Club in Islamabad. The logo features a lion.[8] The team's primary colors are red and orange Kit was revealed during team's launching ceremony held in Pak-China Friendship Centre.[9]

Theme Song

Theme song Chakka Choka performed by Ali Zafar who is the star ambassador of the team as well.Theme song launched in an event held in Pak-China Friendship Center.[10]
