The International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics is believed to have been founded when Aachen professor Theodore von Kármán held a conference in Innsbruck in September 1922.[1] The purpose of the 1922 conference was to discuss questions of hydrodynamics and aerodynamics.[1] The organization is itself a member of the International Council for Science. In 2010, the organization included more than 450 active members coming from 55 countries and 18 affiliated organizations.[1]
