WAP 5 is the name of a class of electric locomotive used by Indian Railways. The first 10 locomotives were imported from ABB in Switzerland in 1995. They have Bo-Bo wheel configuration. They are supposed to be a variant of the Swiss Lok 2000 (Design Concept) and German DB Class 120 (mechanical chassis). Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) started production in 2000.
Other notable features of this locomotive are the provision of taps from the main transformers for Head end power (HEP or Hotel Load), pantry loads, flexible gear coupling and wheel-mounted disc brakes. Braking systems include 160 kN (36,000 lbf) regenerative brakes, loco disc brakes, automatic train air brakes, and a charged spring parking brake.
The Bhopal Shatabdi hauled by a WAP-5 travels at 150 km/h (93 mph) in the New Delhi - Agra Cantt section.
Some of the units homed at Vadodara shed have air-conditioning. The production had been paused for a long time due to an indigenous replacement of the Hurth coupling. But now the production has resumed with the indigenous replacement. The hurth couplings are being replaced by Alternate Drive Gear Assemblies in the newer models.
On 3 July 2014, a WAP-5 set an Indian speed record by hauling a train from Delhi to Agra at within 90 minutes at a speed of 160 km/h or 99 mph.[1]
In October 2015, Chittaranjan Locomotive Works rolled out a WAP5 locomotive (loco number 30086) with Alternate Drive Gear Assembly, modified gear ratio 59:35:19 (3.105), and IGBT based propulsion system for 200 km/h operations (test speed 225 km/h).

Liveries
Recently, Vadodara Shed and Amul Milk made a contract of advertising 20 locomotives of Shed. Thus the Amul livery came into existence. The livery has the sides of locomotive painted in Amul livery. All the recent locomotives are being painted in this livery as part of contract.
