Highway Corridor Overlay District (U.S. Route 521 and South Carolina Highway 160)

The third and final reading of the Panhandle's Highway Corridor Overlay District was approved on June 9, 2014, which applies to properties along Charlotte Highway (U.S. 521) from Waxhaw Highway (S.C. 75) north to the state line and Fort Mill Highway (S.C. 160) east to the county line. The overlay district sets aesthetic requirements on new construction along the corridors covering everything from building materials, placement and setbacks to signage, sidewalks and landscaping.[3]

Economy

Indian Land is home to the headquarters of Continental Tire North America, Red Ventures, Sharonview Federal Credit Union, and The Inspiration Networks. Indian Land will soon welcome the expansion of Red Ventures with a $90MM investment in the area that will double their current footprint along with the relocation of the corporate headquarters of Movement Mortgage which was founded by former NFL player Casey Crawford (American football). Keer America Corporation, Honeywell, URS Corporation and TriNet also maintain a notable presence in the panhandle region.

Incorporation

The community of Indian Land is currently working to incorporate the area into a municipality, separate from Lancaster County. The goal of their incorporation effort is to give Indian Land a voice on the local and state levels with a limited amount of enhanced services to serve the needs of this rapidly growing community. The heart of their plan is to control the runaway growth of Indian Land while preserving the charm of this once rural area. [4] The Town of Indian Land website includes detailed information on the current effort to incorporate.
