Illawarra Junction
The Illawarra Junction is a major railway junction in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, and lies in its inner southern suburbs near the Eveleigh Railway Workshops. The four tracks of the original Illawarra railway line and the six tracks of the Main Suburban Line merge before continuing northwards to Redfern and Central stations.
The junction poses some operational difficulties, as trains from the 'Suburban' tracks on the Main Suburban Line cross over onto the 'Local' tracks in a flat junction just east of Macdonaldtown station, limiting capacity on this section. There have been various proposals to grade-separate this junction but none has yet come to fruition.
