History

The (first) Iga Railway Co. opened the 26 km 1,067 mm gauge line between Iga-Ueno on the Kansai Main Line and Nishi-Nabari in 1922, including a connection at Iga-Kambe station on the Kintetsu Osaka Line. The line was electrified at 1,500 V DC in 1926. The company merged with the Osaka Electric Railway Co. in 1929, which in 1944 became Kintetsu.

The Iga-Kambe - Nishi-Nabari section closed in 1964, and freight services ceased on the balance of the line in 1973.

Operation of the line was transferred by Kintetsu to the (second) Iga Railway Co. in 2007.
