I is the debut extended play by South Korean singer Taeyeon, who is a member of South Korean girl group Girls' Generation. The EP was released on October 7, 2015 by S.M. Entertainment.

Release

In mid-2015, S.M. Entertainment announced that Taeyeon would release her first solo album later that year. The album's title track, "I", features popular rapper Verbal Jint and includes lyrics written by Taeyeon. The album was released via digital music websites at midnight on October 7, the physical copies sold in the stores on same day.[1][2] "U R" debuted at number 3 on various Korean music chart.

Music video

Filmed on-location in Auckland, New Zealand, the video includes sweeping landscapes juxtaposed with city scenes. Taeyeon's older brother makes a cameo in the video as a patron of The Portland Public House bar in Kingsland suburb where she works.[3][4]

Critical reception

Jeff Benjamin of Billboard described the album's title track as "a lush, acoustic-leaning pop-rock cut" reminiscent of Taylor Swift's Red album and praised Taeyeon's vocals, calling her a "vocal powerhouse [who] belts for her life on the final chorus while demonstrating restraint by emoting through the earlier sections."[5]

Commercial performance

I debuted at number 1 on the Gaon Albums Chart for the week ending October 10, 2015.[6] The album entered in the United States on the Billboard World Albums and Heatseeker charts at number 1 and 5, respectively, selling 2,000 copies in the first two days of its release.[5] As of 2015, the album has sold over 119,576 copies in South Korea.[7] The album managed to be the best-selling album by soloist of 2015, and the best-selling album released by a female soloist of all gaon history.

The single managed to be the best-selling single of Korea in October, and surpassed 1 millions of download in December. As of January 28th, the single has 1,146,809M+ of downloads
