IPSC Handgun World Shoot

The IPSC Handgun World Shoot is the highest level handgun match within the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC), described as "the Olympics of the Action Shooting Sports".^[1]

The match consists of several days, comprising at least 30 separate courses of fire^[2] where the best IPSC-shooters from all around the world vie for the title of World Champion. The Handgun World Shoot, Rifle World Shoot and Shotgun World Shoot are held with three year intervals, meaning that since the last Handgun World Shoot was held in 2014, the next Shotgun World Shoot was held during 2015 and the next Rifle World Shoot in 2016.

History

1975 Zurich, Switzerland

The first IPSC Handgun World Shoot was held in 1975 at Zurich, Switzerland and was won by Ray Chapman of USA, who had been central in the development the sport of practical shooting in the late 1950s. Ray was seeded as number one before the championship, and shot an almost perfect match dropping only one point. He continued to compete until 1979 when he retired.

1976 Salzburg, Austria

The second World Shoot was held in Salzburg, Austria in 1976, and was won by Jan Foss of Norway in front of Ray Chapman by a small margin.

1977 Salisbury, Rhodesia

The third World Shoot was held in Salisbury, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in 1977, and was won by Dave Westerhout, who had represented both Britain and Rhodesia in international competitions. Both Ray Champman and Dave Westerhout was highly seeded before the match. Dave later also represented Zimbabwe at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Rapid Fire Pistol. From after the 1977 World Shoot subsequent the championships were to be held every two years.

1979 Johannesburg, South Africa

The 1979 World Shoot IV was held in Johannesburg, South Africa, and was won by Jimmy Von Sorgenfrei, one of the top seeds before the championship. Leading up to the championship, the South African team had many good competitors making the team selection tough. Seemingly out of nowhere Jimmy Von Sorgenfrei had appeared on the competition circuit, improveing his performances consistently throughout the year before the championship, and was selected for the South African National Team of five men.

1981 Johannesburg, South Africa

The 1981 World Shoot V was held in Johannesburg, South Africa, and was won by Ross Seyfried of USA, using a relatively stock firearm compared to the highly tuned firearms of many other shooters. Well known in the U.S., Ross had previously won the 1978 U.S. National Championship, and was member of the US National Team who placed second in the previous 1979 World Shoot. The 1981 championship showed the Americans return with a vengeance when both Ross Seyfried took the individual world title and the US National Team taking gold in the team classification.

1983 Virginia, USA

The 1983 World Shoot VI was held in Virginia, United States, and was won by Rob Leatham of USA, who started shooting as a teenager.

1986 Florida, USA

The 1986 World Shoot VII was held in Florida, United States, and was won by Rob Leatham of USA.

1988 VIII Caracas, Venezuela

The 1988 World Shoot VIII was held in Caracas, Venezuela, and was won by Ross Seyfried of USA.

1990 Adelaide, Australia

The 1990 World Shoot IX was held in Adelaide, Australia, and was won by Doug Koenig of USA, the first competitor using a red dot sight at a World Shoot. Having been interested in shooting since being eleven years old, he was spotted at a local shooting club for his good natural abilities with a handgun.

1991 Johannesburg, South Africa

The 1991 World Shoot X was held in Johannesburg, South Africa, and was won by John Dixon of USA.

1993 Bisley, England

The 1993 World Shoot X was held in Bisley, England, and consisted of 5 days with 34 stages, teams from over 27 countries and a lot of rain. The competitive division had been divided into "Open", "Standard" and "Modified". The Standard division was won by Ted Bonnet of USA, the Modified division by Robert Buntschu of Switzerland and the Open division by Matt Mclearn of Canada. Born in Nova Scotia, Mclearn had moved to the U.S. five years prior the world championship to pursue gunsmithing training and advance in the competitive arena. Right before winning the World Shoot he also placed first in the U.S. Nationals.

1996 Brasilia, Brazil

The 1996 World Shoot XI was held in Brasilia, Brazil. The Open division was won by Todd Jarrett, while the Standard division once again was won by Ted Bonnet of USA.

Todd Jarret from Virginia had established himself as a major player before the event, having placed in the top four of the US Nationals every year since 1990 except one. According to himself he trained well before the World Shoot WSXI in Brazil, and was quoted saying "It's really amazing, the harder I work, the luckier I get."

1999 Cebu, Philippines

The 1999 World Shoot XII was held in Cebu, Philippines. Another division, "Modified" had been introduced, with equipment rules somewhere between the Open and Standard division. Eric Grauffel of France becam Open champion, Michael Voigt of USA became Standard World Champion and Pavel Jasansky of the Czech Republic took the Modified title.

2002 Pietersburg, South Africa

The 2002 World Shoot XIII was held in Pietersburg, South Africa.

2005 Guayaquil, Ecuador

The 2005 World Shoot XIV was held in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Once again Eric Grauffel took the Open title. He was now an 18-year-old student and had already won many European titles, and after the 2005 World Championship, also three World Shoots.

2008 Bali, Indonesia

The 2008 World Shoot XV was held in Bali, Indonesia.

2011 Rhodes, Greece

The 2011 World Shoot XVI was held at Rhodes, Greece.

2014 Florida, USA

The 2014 World Shoot XVII was held at the Universal Shooting Academy in Frostproof, Florida, United States.

2017 France

The World Shoot XVIII is to be held in France in 2017.
