Hourglass figure

An hourglass shape is a description of a female body shape compared with that of a hourglass.

Perception

The hourglass figure is typically associated with females because the physique falls in line with attributes associated with female fertility and attractiveness.[1] This is due to the notion that the protrusions on either side of the torso present. The protrusion outwards in the hip region hereby represents an ability to give birth, the narrow waist represents space for the development or conception of a new organism, while the protrusion in the chest region suggests an ability to nurse.[2] This particular shape indicates that a woman is at her reproductive and sexual peak, and is furthermore more viable for women seeking to have a natural birth.[3]
