List of Private Practice episodes

Private Practice is an American medical drama series created by Shonda Rhimes and produced and broadcast by ABC. The series is a spin-off from Rhimes' other series, Grey's Anatomy. The two-part episode "The Other Side of This Life" (which aired as the twenty-second and twenty-third episodes of Grey's Anatomy's third season in the Spring of 2007) served as the backdoor pilot for this series. The story follows Dr. Addison Montgomery as she relocates from the fictional Seattle Grace Hospital in Seattle, Washington to the Oceanside Wellness Group in Santa Monica, California.

A total of 111 episodes of Private Practice were aired over six seasons, between September 26, 2007 and January 22, 2013.

After things become too complicated in Seattle, Addison travels to Los Angeles to reunite with her old friends from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Much to her best friend's shock, the real reason for her visit is in order to get pregnant but is devastated to learn that she cannot. Cristina finds difficulty in planning her wedding under the constant watch of her and Burke's mother, who are determined to create an extravagant wedding, despite her wishes of having a small ceremony. Callie is surprised to be invited to be Cristina's bridesmaid. With Meredith's father and his wife again in the hospital, she suspects that her stepmother might be trying to get her to talk to Thatcher by faking hiccups. Mark talks to Derek and expresses his disappointment in not working things out with Addison, with whom he had truly fallen in love. Meanwhile, Derek must perform surgery on Ava and she gets her hopes high after Alex tells her that she might get her memory back. George is determined to transfer to Mercy West despite Izzie's continuous begging him not to.
5923"The Other Side of This Life (Part 2)"Michael GrossmanShonda RhimesMay 3, 2007 (2007-05-03)21.23[1]
Addison becomes the temporary obstetrician-gynecologist at the Oceanside Wellness Center in Los Angeles and treats a woman pregnant with a child whose paternity is disputed among three men. She also deals with the aftermath of the discovery that she cannot have children and is comforted by Pete Wilder who flirts with and eventually kisses her. The doctors offer her a position, but she turns them down after realizing that Seattle is where her life is. After Susan returns to the hospital with a severe chest pain, she is rushed into emergency surgery and ultimately dies. Thatcher is devastated by the news and blames Meredith for her death, not knowing she'd actually been by her side all this time. Izzie finds difficulty in accepting that George is going to transfer because of her, but realizes that she can't deny her feelings towards him. Burke confronts his mother who claims that marrying Cristina is a mistake, but confesses that she trusts her son's judgement and is confident that he will make the right decision.

Reception

Responding to criticism of the pilot episode, president of ABC Entertainment Steve McPherson agreed that the episode had spent too much time introducing the characters, and that the future season needed stronger stories. ABC showed confidence in Private Practice by scheduling it at 9pm Wednesdays, hoping it would bolster a weak night for ratings.[121] Creator Shonda Rhimes has commented that the backdoor pilot episode "was a little bit of a high wire act... What I learned in writing it was that the tone was a little bit lighter. Grey's in the best way is sort of high school with scalpels. Private Practice is more grown up."[122] However, USA Today's Robert Bianco was highly critical of the childish nature of Private Practice's characters, writing that: "instead of maturing, Kate Walsh's Addison Montgomery seems to be regressing. A woman who was once a tough, smart, flawed, sexy adult has turned into a fluttering, indecisive sorority girl."[123] Bianco did opine that the first season opener was an improvement on the pilot that preceded it, and although he stated that the supporting cast were "ill-used", he commented: "Just consider the talent here: Amy Brenneman, Taye Diggs, Audra McDonald, Paul Adelstein and Tim Daly (who really deserves a hit, after being so good in so many excellent flops). These are people who have proved they can handle grown-up material. How about letting them practice?"[123] Rhimes believes that the show "found its footing" in the second season, with the characters more grounded and focus increased on medical and ethical issues. Actress Kate Walsh commented: "Part of what happened this year is the show got a lot clearer about what it is. It felt more organic about the way cases came up."[124] However, at the end of the second season, Bianco opined: "It's a better show than it used to be, but considering the talents in that cast, it's still not nearly good enough."[125]
