Hickory Ridge High School is a comprehensive public high school in Harrisburg, North Carolina. It became the sixth high school in the Cabarrus County Schools system when it opened on August 27, 2007. It has been designated an Honor School of Excellence for 2008-2009, 2009-2010, and 2010-2011. This is the third consecutive year the school has achieved this designation, North Carolina's highest distinction, by the North Carolina Board of Education. It is one of only four traditional high schools in the state to receive this honor.
Student Body
The student body consists of students in grades 9-12, with about 350 students per grade. The 2011-2012 school year was the fifth year of the school, 2010-2011 was the first year without students from feeder high schools Jay M. Robinson High School and Central Cabarrus High School. Enrollment fluctuates around 1,300 students, with a listed capacity of 1,500.[2]
The Class of 2010 was the last class to graduate from Hickory Ridge that incorporated students from two feeder schools originally used to filter students into Hickory Ridge from the surrounding area that included Central Cabarrus High School and Jay M. Robinson High School.
The Class of 2009 was the first graduating class of Hickory Ridge High School. Graduation occurred on Saturday, June 13, 2009 at 4pm in the Cabarrus Arena.
Campus
Architects took the design of Jay M. Robinson High School and found more economical means of design. Instead of two central courtyards and a quarter-mile long hallway, there are four wings branching off of the main part of the building. The rest of Hickory Ridge is a scaled-down version of Jay M. Robinson with smaller hallways and classrooms.
The campus is 106 acres (0.43 km2) in size includes the school facility and athletic facilities.
The large open area next to HRHS is now the new Hickory Ridge Middle School.
The Bridge towards the town of Harrisburg was rebuilt to support the oncoming traffic of both Hickory Ridge High and Middle Schools to also support bus weight to make travel time quicker for some buses that pickup students across Highway 49 instead of taking the elbow around to get to the campus
Athletics
Hickory Ridge's athletic teams are known as the "Ragin' Bulls". The school is a member of the South Piedmont 3A Athletic Conference.
In 2010 Hickory Ridge won its first state championships. Zack Lambert won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 52.13 seconds at the Varsity Swimming State Championship in Cary, NC.
The Hickory Ridge Varsity Men's soccer team made it to the first round of the state championships in 2007, as well as 2008. They lost in the first round of the play-offs both years.[3]
The Hickory Ridge Varsity football team went 1-10 in its first season, with its sole win against Piedmont HS. In its second season, they went 5-6, with wins coming against Mt. Pleasant HS, Jay M Robinson HS, Central Cabarrus HS, Concord HS and Piedmont HS. They narrowly missed the state playoffs in 2008.
Hickory Ridge Baseball won its first game in school history on March 5, 2008 against Sun Valley High school.
Hickory Ridge Boy's Tennis team placed second in the South Piedmont Conference in 2008 with a record of 12-2.
The Hickory Ridge Men's Swim team won the South Piedmont 3A Conference Championship for the 2008-2009 season by defeating defending champion Marvin Ridge (Who is not part of the South Piedmont 3A Conference anymore). For the 2009-2010 season they placed second to Jay M. Robinson
Hickory Ridge Women's Cross Country team won the South Piedmont Conference for the 2009 season, with the men coming in third after only coming in second two meets, to Jay M. Robinson HS, and Cox Mill HS.
Hickory Ridge Varsity Football team won their first conference championships for the 2012 season when they defeated their toughest competition at that time A. L. Brown High School.
Band Program
Hickory Ridge boasts a large band program featuring concert ensembles and the school's marching band, The Blue Regiment.[4]
The Blue Regiment won grand champion in their first competition, earning the school's first trophies. They were invited to join the largest New Year's Day parade in London, England on January 1, 2009 and will return to London to march again on January 1, 2016.
Each year, the marching band creates and produces a new show that they perform at most home football games, select away games, and take to local, regional, and national competitions. The shows produced so far include:

In 2013, with their show "One Day...," the Blue Regiment competed in their first national-level competition at the Bands of America Super Regional in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. They placed 21st overall in preliminary performances and did not advance to finals. They returned to the BOA field on October 11, 2014 with "SynchroniCITY" at Wake Forest University and placed 17th in preliminary performance. On October 10, 2015, the Blue Regiment will compete in their 3rd BOA competition with "In Your Eyes."
