Hertfordshire Rangers F.C.
Hertfordshire Rangers F.C. were an amateur football team based in Watford.
History
The club received FA recognition in 1866, and were formed at some point before that. Rangers featured in the FA Cup between 1875 and 1881, making them the dominant side in Hertfordshire. One reliable source states that they were founded in 1865.[1]
Their team were largely composed of players from Cambridge University students, as the university did not have a team at the time, and schools at Aldenham and Elstree. When the club folded in December 1882, it was because they were unable to replace players who had left the schools for university.
A club bearing the same name was formed in 2001.
Grounds
The club occupied three grounds during their history, all of which were close to Watford Junction and the Malden Hotel, their social headquarters. One of these grounds was a meadow on Langley Road, Watford.
Notable players
Two players were selected for England while registered to Rangers:[2]
- Robert Barker (1872)
- Francis Sparks (1879)
New club formed
In May 2008 a new club of the same name was established by Matt Wright. They reached the 2010 Cup Final where they lost to Albury 3–0.
Their current manager is Pat Dee, appointed 26 June 2009.
In October 2011 the 'new' Hertfordshire Rangers won a sponsorship from InterSys who provided the team with a new kit.
