Walter Robert Karl Heinz Birnbacher (26 May 1910 in Villach – 5 December 1991 in Villach) was a German officer in the Kriegsmarine during World War II and recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross (German: Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes). The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. After World War II he served in the Bundesmarine attaining the rank of Konteradmiral.
