Hangzhou Dianzi University (HDU) (simplified Chinese: 杭州电子科技大学; traditional Chinese: 杭州電子科技大學; pinyin: Hángzhōu diànzǐ kējì dàxué) is a university located in Hangzhou, China. It was founded in 1956 as the second public university in Zhejiang Province. It was formerly named Hangzhou Institute of Electrical Engineering and was renamed in 2004.
HDU is administered directly by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Provincial Government. It emphasizes the disciplines of engineering, economics, sciences and arts. It has more than 40 research institutions and enrolls 28000 students with 2200 faculty and staff. The university has completed a host of high-tech research projects and Province or Ministry sponsored research projects, many of which were awarded the National First/Second Prize for Scientific and Technology Progress, the National Invention Prize, and the National Pedagogical Achievement Prize.
The university is among the top few universities in China in terms of the postgraduate program admission rate and the successful employment rate for its graduates.
The university is also known as the "The Cradle of Entrepreneurs" in China and has an extensive entrepreneurial network worldwide, the most successful among it is Jack Ma, who is the founder and ex-CEO of Alibaba Group and leads his China's largest e-commerce business go through a record setting initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange in 2014, raising $21.8 billion and the largest offering for a U.S.-listed company ever.[1]
