Haj Committee of India

Haj Committee of India is a committee in India formed under Haj Committee Act 2002, for making arrangements for the pilgrimage of Muslims of India for Haj. A special Hajj passport is issued for this purpose.

Ataur Rehman is the CEO and M.A. Khan is the personnel officer. Its head office is in Mumbai.

History

The first formal meeting of the Haj committee was held in 1927 in Bombay, headed by the then Commissioner of Police Mr. D. Healy. Until 1994 sea route was the major route for traveling to Mecca, from Mumbai. With the increase in air transport in 1995, the sea route was completely replaced by air route. Further embarkation points were added, which presently include Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkatta, Bangalore, Kozhikode, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Srinagar, Nagpur, Patna, Jaipur, Guwahati and Aurangabad.
