Guntur Municipal Corporation is the civic body that governs the city of Vijayawada in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is one of the oldest municipalities in the state.[1]

History

Guntur municipality was constituted in the year 1866 and the first elected body was formed in 1881. The municipality was upgraded to II-Grade in 1891, I-Grade in 1917, Special Grade in 1952 and then to Selection Grade in 1960. In 1994, the Municipal Corporation was formed.[2][3]

Governance

The city limits were expanded by merging ten surrounding villages into the corporation.[4][5]

Governing body

Standing Committee Chairman,[6] Mayor, Deputy Mayor forms the main administrative wing.

Recent Years (1995-2000)

During this period the corporation has been undertaken by the governing body along with the executive body including IAS. This period in corporation is also termed as effective governance in history of the City. There is a considerable political affect from ruling party, then Telugu Desam Party constituting the Standing Committee Chairman [9][10] as powerful term in governing the Guntur City.[11]
