Goo Hara (born January 13, 1991) is a South Korean idol singer and actress. She is best known for being a former member of Korean pop girl group Kara and for portraying Choi Da-hye, the president's daughter, on City Hunter in 2011.
Biography
Goo Hara was born on January 13, 1991,[2] in Gwangju, South Korea. Before debuting, she participated in SM's youth appearance tournament in 2005. In 2007, she auditioned for JYP, however, she lost the runoff.[3]
She was also an online shopping mall model, having been scouted after her photos were uploaded onto DSP's homepage. Thus, Goo Hara became a member of Kara. She is currently attending Sungshin Women's University.[4]
On January 5, 2010, during an appearance at SBS' Strong Heart she admitted to getting dental and minor cosmetic surgery on her face. She confessed to receiving one filler injection on her nose and had her teeth fixed. She stated that she had always had double eyelids, but had surgery to get them more defined.[5][6]
Career
Kara (2008–2016)
Kara debuted on March 29, 2007. In 2008, however, a member, Kim Sunghee, left the group. DSP Entertainment replaced her with two new members, Goo Hara and Kang Jiyoung, and Kara made a comeback with Rock U, which changed their image from "Hip-hop" to "cute and playful".
On December 4, 2008, Kara had a comeback on M! Countdown with "Pretty Girl".[7] In February 2009, Kara released their second mini-album "Honey". "Honey" became the group's first No. 1 single when it topped the charts on M! Countdown and The Music Trend.[8]
In late July 2009, Kara revealed their second album named Revolution.[9] Due to the popularity of their songs "Wanna" and "Mister", Kara's overall popularity increased. Kara started promotions with their third mini-album Lupin in February 2010.[10]
In August 2010, Kara officially debuted in Japan with "Mister". After their successful debut in Japan, Kara released their fourth mini-album Jumping in November 2010.
On January 19, 2011, it was announced that Goo Hara would be terminating her contract with DSP Entertainment along with three other members of Kara, and a lawsuit was filed on their behalf. Later that day, it was announced that Goo Hara would discontinue her involvement with the suit and had rejoined the company,[11] as she apparently was not fully aware of the lawsuit's details.[12]
Solo activities
In late 2008, she appeared along with the other Kara members in an episode of MBC sitcom Here He Comes, having the most prominent role as a female gang leader.
In October 2009, she became a cast member in the KBS 2TV reality show Invincible Youth (청춘불패).[13] On March 14, 2011, it was also announced that Hara would make her acting debut in SBS City Hunter, after filming the Japanese sitcom Urakara.[14] She starred as Choi Da-hye, the daughter of South Korea's president. She also appeared as a female lead in A-JAX's "Never Let Go" music video.
In November 2011, she and Nicole Jung became the new MCs for SBS Inkigayo.[15] They left the show on August 19, 2012.
She recorded a song titled "Secret Love" which she performed during Kara's first concert tour, Karasia. The music video featured ZE:A's Siwan, and they acted as a lovely couple.[16] In 2013, she collaborated with Japanese musician and songwriter Fukuyama Masaharu to record a song called "Magic of Love" in Korean under the project group HARA+. The song was used as a soundtrack for FujiTV's drama Galileo, which Masaharu starred in.[17][18] Later on, Goo Hara had a cameo appearance in Galileo 2 as a company employee.
In October 2013, she was appointed as the blood donation ambassador for the Hanmaum Blood Bank.[19]
Her own reality show titled "On & Off"[20] aired on December 29, 2014 on MBC Music.
In January 2015, it was revealed that she was chosen to MC a new KBS idol beauty show, A Style For You along with Super Junior's Kim Heechul, EXID's Hani and SISTAR's Bora.[21]
She said during an interview in April 2015 that after KARA's comeback in May, she will debut as a solo with her first album in July.
Personal life
On June 28, 2011, DSP Media announced that Hara was in a relationship with Yong Jun-hyung from Beast. DSP Media also announced, "They do have good feelings towards one another, but they're still getting to know each other."[22]
March 27, 2013 saw the end of their relationship, as Cube Entertainment and DSP Media announced that they "naturally drifted apart".[23]
