Great Clifton is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Allerdale in the English county of Cumbria. In the 2001 census, it has a population of 1,101,[1] increasing slightly to 1,114 at the 2011 Census.[2]
The Village contains three pubs (Market Cross, The Queens Head (formerly the Lions Club) and The Old Ginn House, the latter also being a hotel and a restaurant. The village is also home too a Post Office and a General Store.
The village school, Derwent Vale Primary School, was built in 1995. The previous school was opposite the old pit and still stands now, only as a house.
There are several wind farms nearby, one being the Winscales Moor Wind Farm whose Community Fund has contributed money to the local village hall. Workington Town Centre is 3 miles west of the Village and Cockermouth is 7 miles East of it.
The local Rugby League team, the Great Clifton Lions, currently compete in the CARLA League.
Clifton was the village footballer John Burridge lived in as a child: the village is mentioned in his autobiography Budgie.[3]
Governance
Both Great and Little Clifton are in the electoral ward of Clifton. The total population for this ward at the 2011 Census was 1,594.[4]
Listed building
There is one listed building in the parish, the house at No. 5 Middlegate. It is roughcast with a green slate roof, and has two storeys and three bays. The doorway has an architrave with a pediment, and the windows are sashes.[5]
