Kashipur (Hindi: काशीपुर, Urdu: کاشیپر) is a city and a Nagar Nigam[1] in Udham Singh Nagar district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Kashipur was declared as Nagar Nigam on 26 January 2013. Kashipur is located at 29°13′N 78°57′E / 29.22°N 78.95°E / 29.22; 78.95.[2]

History

Kashipur was known as Govishana, during the time of Harsha (606–647 AD). The ruins of the large settlement of those days can be still seen near the city.[3] The famous chinese pilgrim Xuanzang also travelled the city in 7th century. Kashipur is believed to have a good historic trade of clothes and metal vessels.

Etymology

Kashipur was named after Kashinath Adhikari, the founder of the township and governor of the pargana, one of the officers of the Chand Kings of Kumaon in the 16th and 17th centuries.[4]

The nearest airport is Pantnagar Airport which is 72 km away at Pantnagar whereas, the nearest international airport is Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi which is 214 km away.[5]

Kashipur is connected to Ramnagar, Kathgodam, Moradabad, Bareilly, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Jaisalmer and Delhi by rail network. Kashipur Railway Station is under the administrative control of the Izzatnagar division of the North Eastern Railway zone of the Indian Railways which currently serves the city.

IIM Kashipur

The Indian Institute of Management Kashipur also known as IIM Kashipur, is a public business school located in Kashipur, Uttarakhand, India. It is one of the thirteen Indian Institutes of Management the government has set up during the Eleventh Five-year Plan. The foundation stone was laid by the HRD Minister Kapil Sibal on 29 April 2011.

Heritage

Drona Sagar Lake

Drona Sagar is believed to be associated with Guru Dronacharya, teacher of the Pandavas and the Kauravas in the epic Mahabharata. Many believe that the Drona Sagar was created by the Pandavas as a Guru Dakshina (fee) for Dronacharya. The Skanda Purana states that the water of Drona Sagar is as holy as that of the Ganges. The excavation site at Drona Sagar is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Shree Moteshwar Mahadev Mandir

Shree Moteshwar Mahadev, also known as Shree Bheem Shankar Mahadev, is an abode of Lord Shiva in Kashipur. This place was known as the Dakini State in ancient days. This is where Lord Shiva is situated in his full face as a Jyotirlingam known as Bheem Shankar. This is the Bheem Shankar Jyotirlingam.

Maa Balsundari Mandir

Bal Sundari Mandir, also known as Chaiti Mandir, is a temple located in Kashipur.

Chaiti Mela

During Navratras in March a grand fair is held here every year. The fair draws thousands of pilgrims and devotees from far-flung areas.

Gurudwara Shri Nankana Sahib

The Dhela river used to cause havoc in the city by flooding each year. When Guru Nanak Dev ji reached this place, the local people were on the verge of leaving this place for safer grounds. Guru Nanak Dev ji told them to be patient and advised them to remain there only. Thereafter, on the riverside, he started singing kirtan. As the kirtan was in progress, the river rose. Guru Nanak Dev ji performed the ardas and the river, after touching Guru Nanak Dev ji feet, receded, moved to a distance away from the town. It is said that since then, the river has never flooded the city again. Gurdwara Sri Nankana Sahib is located in the city of Kashipur, district Udham Singh Nagar, in Mohalla Pakka Kot, near Nagrath Mandir and Uday Raj College. It is about one km away from the bus stand and the railway Station of Kashipur and located on the Ramnagar - Manpur bypass road.[7]
