In the United States, González ranked as the 23rd-most common surname in 2007.[3]

González is of Spanish origin, and it means "son of Gonzalo".[4] Common spelling variations include: Gonzales, Gonzáles, Gonzalés, González and Gonzalez (without an acute accent). The variant Gunsolleys appears among people descended from a Spaniard with the surname Gonsález who settled in the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam.
