Gleneagles Hong Kong Hospital (Chinese: 港怡醫院) is a private hospital under construction in Wong Chuk Hang, Hong Kong. The 500-bed hospital will be managed by Singapore-based Parkway Pantai and Hong Kong-listed NWS Holdings, with clinical services provided by Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, University of Hong Kong. The hospital is expected to start operating in 2017.

History

Gleneagles Hong Kong Hospital is built on the site of the former Nam Fung temporary housing area in Wong Chuk Hang. The area was cleared in 1994.[1]

In 1993, a group of Hong Kong Canadian doctors planned to build on the site a specialist hospital, named the Canadian International Hospital and Technology Exchange Centre of Hong Kong.[2] The plan however did not come to fruition and the land was left vacant for two decades.

In 2009, the Hong Kong government invited local and overseas organisations to submit expressions of interest for the development of private hospitals at four sites. Wong Chuk Hang was the most popular site with 12 organisations showing interest.[3] Many of them however did not bid for the site when the government invited tenders in 2012. Some organisations who had expressed interest commented that the terms of the tender were too demanding. One of the terms required that 30 per cent of services must be provided at standard package prices, and could make it difficult to be financially viable.[4]

The site eventually was awarded to GHK Hospital Limited for HK$1.69 billion in 2013.[5] Parkway Pantai and NWS Holdings will contribute 60 and 40 per cent respectively of the total investment cost of approximately HK$5 billion.[6]

Management

Gleneagles Hong Kong Hospital is a joint venture between Singapore-based Parkway Pantai and Hong Kong-listed NWS Holdings, with clinical services provided by Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, University of Hong Kong.
