Gleadless Townend is an outer city district of Sheffield centred on the junction of the ring road, White Lane (B6054) and Gleadless Road (B6388).

History

On 20 September 2008, a 75-year-old woman was seriously injured when she was fell and was subsequently struck by a tram while it was arriving at the local tram stop.[1][2] Up to 30 firefighters, plus police, paramedics and Supertram's emergency response team, were involved in the operation to free the woman, who was trapped between the edge of the platform and the centre section of the tram. The tram was lifted on hydraulic jacks and a section of the bodywork was cut away to allow the woman to be removed and transferred to the Northern General Hospital, suffering from severe head injuries, a fractured pelvis, and a fractured leg.[3]

Transport

Gleadless Townend is served by multiple bus routes and two routes of the Sheffield Supertram light rail network, forming a minor transport interchange.

A number of bus routes serve Gleadless Townend, including First South Yorkshire's 38, 51 and 701 routes and TM Travel's 252 and 294 services. In addition, the area has in the past been the terminus of tram replacement bus services operated by Stagecoach Sheffield on behalf of Sheffield Supertram in the event of a portion of the network being closed.
