Girish Mahajan (born 17 May 1960) is an Indian politician and member of 13th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for Jamner Constituency 5th Term since 1995,1999, 2004, 2009 & 2014.[1][2] Currently he is Cabinet Minister for Water Resources[3] in Devendra Fadnavis ministry (2014–).
Background and family
Mahajan was born in Jamner into a Marathi family. Dattatray Mahajan had been a member of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from Jamner Constituency with Indian National Congress in 1995.[4][5]
Mahajan married Sadhana, in a match that was arranged in the traditional Indian manner by their parents. They have a 2 daughters named Smt. Priya Choudhary & Miss. Shreya Mahajan.
Education and early career
After completing ten years of schooling from New English School, Jamner. Mahajan attended Art, Commerce Mahavidyalaya, Jamner for his intermediate. After completing his 12th standard, he enrolled at Art, Commerce Mahavidyalaya, Jamner, for a five year in Commerce, and graduated in 1981.
Political career
As a college student, Mahajan an active member of ABVP in 1978.[6] In the ABVP, he started as a grassroots worker where he painted walls and stuck promotional posters on them for politicians and appointed as Taluka President of ABVP.
Mahajan' political career commenced in earnest in the early eighties, when he became Taluka President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (youth wing of the BJP) in Maharashtra.
In 1992, Mahajan was elected as a Gram-Panchayat Election from Jamner. Three years later in 1995, he was elected to the Maharashtra state assembly for the first time. He is currently serving his 5th term as MLA as of 2014. Mahajan was sworn in as the Water Resources Minister[7] of Maharashtra from the BJP on 31 October 2014. His government won a confidence motion by voice vote on 12 November 2014 allowing it to government.
