The founding of the school dates to 1917, when the townspeople decided to establish the first high school in the county outside Sturgeon Bay.[3] In 1941, two student athletes from Gibraltar High School's Future Farmers of America drowned while taking part in an annual camping trip.[4] In 1983, 1984, and 1985, the school hosted the Peninsula Music Festival in the auditorium.[5][6][7] Door County Idol auditions were held at the school in 2012.[8]
