Naegumgang Station on the Geumgangsan Electric Railway

The Geumgangsan Line (Hangul: 금강산선; hanja: 金剛山線; RR: Geumgangsan Seon; MR: Kŭmgangsan Sŏn) is an abandoned railway which operated between Cheorwon Station (Gyeongwon Line) and Naegumgang Station (the inland part of Mount Kumgang).

History

Built in 1924 by the modernizing Japanese administration of Korea, the line was known as the Kongosan Electric Railway (Japanese: 金剛山電気鉄道 Hepburn: Kongōsan denki tetsudō) and operated between on a 116.6 km electrified route at 1500 V DC. The line was constructed through the following stages:

Date Section Length
1 August 1924 Cheorwon - Gimhwa 28.8 km
30 November 1925 Gimhwa - Geumseong 22.2 km
15 September 1926 Geumseong - Tangam 8.6 km
1 September 1927 Tangam - Changdo 8.0 km
15 April 1929 Changdo - Hyeolli 15.1 km
25 September 1929 Hyeolli - Hwagye 12.0 km
15 May 1930 Hwagye - Geumganggu (Malhwiri) 13.3 km
1 July 1931 Geumganggu - Naegeumgang 8.6 km

The interval of Changdo-Naegeumgang was initially closed in 1944 under the influence of the Pacific War and the rest of this railway was finally removed in 1950 due to the Korean War. Before the Korean war, the whole line belonged to the territory of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), but because of territorial changes during the way, the western part of the line fell within the territory of the Republic of Korea (South Korea).
