The Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya (Gandhi Memorial Institution) is a museum and public service institution, showcasing the life and principles of Mahatma Gandhi and highlights the role of him in Bihar during the Independence struggle of India.[1] It is one of the eleven Gandhi Sanghralayas (Gandhi Museums) in the country.[2]
History
Years after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948 an appeal was made to the citizens of India nationwide to build a memorials for Gandhi. By the help of contributions of poor and rich citizens of India, a trust was established with the name Mahatma Gandhi National Memorial Trust, for this cause.[3][4] The Patna Sangrahalaya was established in 1967[5] near the North-Western corner of Gandhi Maidan. It was a unit of the Central Gandhi Sangrahalaya Samiti till July 1971, when the decision was taken to make the existing five units (Ahmadabad, Madurai, Bairakpore, Mumbay, Patna) as autonomous one. Since then, Gandhi Sangrahalaya, Patna is an autonomous and a self-governing institution.[6]
Located in a quiet place, it is a very good memorial of Gandhiji, it contains a "Visual Biography of Bapuji" containing big photos, paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, quotations etc.[7] All the major events in his life has been told here. There are close to a dozen odd photographs of his childhood. There is also a section containing a dozen odd photographs of his childhood and many rare photographs depicting various phases of Mahatma Gandhi right from his childhood days until being taken to the crematorium. A replica of his room is also placed in the hall. The building houses a library which has a rich collection of books, magazine, literature & audio-video material related to the life of Mahatma Gandhi. There is a book store, related to the life of Gandhi, is also in the compound.[8]
