Gajuwaka is an area lying approximately 15 km to the south of Visakhapatnam City in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. Since most of the heavy industries established in Visakhapatnam, like HPCL and Vizag Steel, lie in close proximity of Gajuwaka, its growth has mirrored that of Visakhapatnam. On November 21, 2005, the Gajuwaka Municipal Corporation was merged into the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC).[1]

Etymology

The name Gajuwaka is derived from the words "Gaja" (elephant) and "Vaka" (pond).

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Gajuwaka had a population of 259,944. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Gajuwaka has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 63%. In Gajuwaka, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Commerce

Growing into a factory town, since the 1990s it has seen a rapid increase in commercial establishments like jewellery shops, shopping malls, hotels, restaurants and cinema theaters. It is the focal point for commerce for most villages and suburbs to its south, not counting its own population.

Transport

Gajuwaka is an important transit point on the NH-5. A large majority of buses going south of Visakhapatnam stop here. Apart from that several city buses start/end at the Gajuwaka bus depot. Easy access to railway station to Duvvada railway station (7.6km) and Visakhapatnam Junction (15km) from Old Gajuwaka Junction. The Visakhapatnam Airport is a 7.2km away from Old Gajuwaka Junction, via NH-5.

The City Buses from RTC Complex towards Gajuwaka Via Scindia is numbered with 400 and Via Highway Road is numbered with 38.

Politics

Gajuwaka constituency was formed in the year 2009. Earlier it was under the Pendurthi constituency.
