Gabriel Isaac Luna (born December 5, 1982) is an American actor and producer. He is best known for his starring role as Tony Bravo on the El Rey Network's action-drama television series Matador (2014). On film, has co-starred in the black comedy Bernie (2011), the sports comedy Balls Out (2014), the drama Freeheld (2015), and the horror comedy Gravy (2015). Luna starred as Paco Contreras on ABC's crime drama series Wicked City.

Personal life

Gabriel Isaac Luna was born in Travis, Texas to Deborah Ann (née Perez) and Gabriel Lopez Luna (1962–82).[1][2] His father died aged 20, shortly before Luna was born.[3] He was raised in Austin, Texas. Luna attended St. Edward's University, where he made his stage debut as Romeo in Romeo and Juliet. Luna graduated from St. Edward's in 2005.[4] He has been married to Romanian actress Smaranda Luna (née Ciceu) since February 2011.[2][5][6]

Career

In 2005, Luna made his film debut in Fall to Grace, which premiered at the South by Southwest (SXSW). In 2007, Luna performed voice-over work for the science fiction video game BlackSite: Area 51.[4] He is a founding member of the Austin-based Paper Chairs Theatre Company.[7] On stage in Austin, Luna has portrayed Sergei Maxudov in Black Snow (2009),[8] the title character in Orestes (2009),[9] and Clov in Endgame (2010).[10] For these three performances, he received the Austin Critics Table Best Lead Actor Award in 2010.[11] Luna then starred in the 2010 film Dance with the One, which was selected for Narrative Feature competition at South by Southwest.[4] The following year, he had a supporting role in the black comedy film Bernie (2011), directed by Richard Linklater. Luna's television credits include minor roles in series such as Prison Break, Touch, and NCIS: Los Angeles, as well as an uncredited role in the television film Temple Grandin.[4]

In 2014, he was cast in the leading role of Tony Bravo on the El Rey Network television series Matador.[12] The series premiered on July 15, 2014 and ran for one season of 13 episodes, ending on October 7, 2014.[13] That same year, he co-starred as Vinnie in the sports comedy Balls Out, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 19, 2014.[14] In 2015, Luna recurred as Miguel Gilb, a friend of Taylor Kitsch's character, on the second season of the HBO anthology drama series True Detective.[15] Also in 2015, he will co-star in the Julianne Moore and Ellen Page-led drama film Freeheld, directed by Peter Sollett,[16] and the comedy film Gravy, directed by James Roday.[17] In March 2015, Luna was cast as Paco Contreras, a detective searching for a serial killer on the Sunset Strip, on ABC's crime drama series Wicked City.[18] In 2016, he will star as border patrol agent Lance Flores in the thriller Transpecos, starring opposite Clifton Collins, Jr. and Johnny Simmons. The film will have its world premiere at South by Southwest.[19]
